Formation and Early Missionary Work

The Diocese of Eastern Himalaya has its origins in the early missionary movements that began in the 19th century. Christian missionaries, particularly from Anglican and Presbyterian traditions, ventured into the hills and valleys of the Eastern Himalayas, bringing with them the message of Jesus Christ and setting up schools, healthcare services, and social outreach programs. The region, with its diverse ethnic groups, cultures, and languages, was fertile ground for mission work, with missionaries focusing on both evangelism and social upliftment.

Integration into the Church of North India

In 1970, several Protestant denominations—Anglicans, Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Methodists, and others—came together to form the Church of North India (CNI). This unifying effort sought to strengthen the Christian witness in India by pooling resources, people, and efforts for mission. The Diocese of Eastern Himalaya was formally integrated into CNI as part of this historic union, allowing it to expand its reach and better serve the local communities.

Spiritual and Social Growth

The Diocese has since grown in both size and influence. It encompasses a wide geographical area, from the tea gardens of Darjeeling to the borders of Sikkim, Bhutan, and Nepal, and extending to the remote areas of Assam. The diocese is known for its rich tapestry of congregations, drawing from a mix of local ethnicities, including Lepchas, Bhutias, Nepalis, Bengalis, and Assamese people. This diversity is reflected in the diocese’s worship and ministry, as services are held in multiple languages and cultures are celebrated within the church.

Throughout its history, the Diocese of Eastern Himalaya has remained committed to its mission of service. The establishment of schools, hospitals, and social welfare programs has been a hallmark of the church’s work. Educational institutions such as St. Paul’s School, Darjeeling, and many others have not only provided quality education but have also fostered a sense of moral and spiritual responsibility among generations of students.

Leadership and Vision

The diocese has been blessed with visionary leaders who have guided it through changing times. Over the decades, Bishops of the Diocese have upheld the tradition of strong spiritual leadership, while also addressing the social challenges faced by the region. The current Bishop, Rt. Rev. Roshan Thapa, continues this legacy with a focus on bringing the Gospel closer to the hearts of the people and working for peace, justice, and development in the region.

Engaging with the Community

In recent years, the Diocese has actively engaged in various social issues, including education, healthcare, disaster relief, and empowerment of women and youth. The Church’s commitment to the well-being of society has made it a trusted partner in the development of the Eastern Himalaya region. Through its various congregations, the Diocese seeks to address the spiritual and material needs of its members, creating a model of holistic Christian ministry.

Moving Forward

As the Diocese of Eastern Himalaya continues to grow, it faces new challenges and opportunities. The Church remains committed to nurturing faith in the face of modern pressures while maintaining its focus on community development. The diocese also plays a key role in interfaith dialogue, working alongside people of different religious traditions to promote peace and understanding in a diverse region.

With initiatives such as the forthcoming Sampark and Sangati magazines, the Diocese is evolving to meet the needs of its congregations in new and creative ways. These efforts are part of a larger vision to keep the Church relevant, accessible, and deeply connected to the people it serves.

The history of the Diocese of Eastern Himalaya is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community in one of the most beautiful and challenging regions of India. As it continues its mission, the diocese remains committed to bringing the light of Christ to the Eastern Himalayas, in word, deed, and service.
